The Art of Becoming: Leaving Your Mark
Share
Today, I’ve found myself thinking less about where I’m going and more about what it means to me.
The conversations I have.
The work I create.
The people I love.
The places I visit.
I want to leave gentle marks behind me.
The older I get, the more I realise that meaning isn’t something we stumble across one day.
It’s something we create.
It’s written into ordinary afternoons.
Into learning a new skill simply because you’re curious.
Into saying yes to an adventure.
Into creating something that didn’t exist before you imagined it.
Into choosing kindness when it would’ve been easier not to.
Sometimes I think we’re all artists in one way or another.
Not because we all paint.
But because every decision we make adds another brushstroke to the life we’re creating.
Every book we read changes us.
Every place we explore expands us.
Every person we meet leaves a fingerprint on who we’re becoming.
And in return, we leave a fingerprint on them too.
I wonder if that’s why human beings have always been explorers.
We’ve crossed oceans.
Mapped mountains.
Written music.
Built cities.
Preserved history.
Reached for the stars.
Not simply because we wanted somewhere new to go but because creating, discovering and understanding are part of who we are.
We’re always becoming.
Perhaps that’s why I don’t want to rush through my life anymore.
I don’t just want to reach milestones. I also want to collect stories.
To notice beautiful architecture.
To walk through museums and wonder about the hands that built them.
To read books written by people I’ll never meet.
To hear ideas that completely change my perspective.
To leave behind work that encourages someone else to believe in themselves.
Not because I need recognition. Because I want my life to participate in the world.
I think somewhere along the way we’ve become so focused on consuming that we’ve forgotten how deeply fulfilling it is to contribute.
To add something.
An idea.
A kindness.
A piece of art.
A memory.
A conversation.
A solution.
A garden.
A family tradition.
Something that didn’t exist before we were here.
Maybe becoming isn’t just about changing ourselves.
Maybe it’s about expanding what we leave behind.
Not necessarily in size.
But in depth.
The more I heal, the more patient I become.
The more patient I become, the better I love.
The better I love, the safer the people around me feel.
And perhaps they’ll carry a little of that into someone else’s life.
It’s strange when you think about it.
Healing ourselves isn’t a separate journey from helping humanity.
It might be one of the quietest ways we do exactly that.
Our ancestors shaped the world we inherited.
Now it’s our turn to shape the one we’ll leave behind.
Not through perfection.
Not through fame.
But through the countless ordinary moments where we choose to add something meaningful instead of simply passing through.
Perhaps that’s what becoming really is.
Not finding meaning.
Creating it.
One choice.
One conversation.
One discovery.
One act of courage.
with love,
